holidays!

Het jaar loopt ten einde en dat is een mooi moment om eens even terug te blikken.
2009 was een mooi jaar voor mij, vol nieuwe ervaringen, gekke situaties en moeilijke momenten. Het is een jaar geweest van vechten: vechten tegen armoede, tegen vrouwonvriendelijke overtuigingen, tegen de droogte, tegen politiek onrechtvaardigheid. Maar het was ook een jaar van overwinningen: een paar van mijn dames die voor het eerst alleen op uitwisseling gegaan zijn en zo voor de allereerste keer buiten hun land gekomen zijn. Vrouwen die een jaar geleden amper buitenshuis kwamen en nu in groep snoepgoed, shampoo, zeep, koekjes,... maken om te verkopen. Families die een extra inkomen hebben doordat ze producten op onze feria kunnen verkopen. En persoonlijk was het ook een jaar van veel warmte: letterlijk, met 360 dagen zon in Pespire, en figuurlijk. Daarbij denk ik aan het vertrouwen dat al die vrouwen mij als buitenlandse geven, aan alle tortillas die ze mij voorgeschoteld hebben, elke deur die voor mij opengezet wordt, elke reunie die bijgewoond wordt.
Het is een mooi jaar geweest, maar het is voor mij tijd om even mijn eigen batterijen op te laden en dus vertrek ik voor een paar weken naar Belgie, naar mijn eigen familie en vrienden. Tot volgend jaar, dus, en ondertussen:

Vrolijke kerst en een gelukkig nieuwjaar!!


This year is coming to an end and that makes for a nice moment to look back. 2009 was a beautiful year for me, with loads of new experiences, strange situations and difficult moments too. It's been a year of fights: fights agains poverty, against woman-unfriedly convictions, against the drought, against political injustice. But it's also been a year of victories: a couple of my ladies who went alone on an interchange and thus for the very first time left their country. Women who a year ago hardly came out of their houses, that are now producing sweets, shampoo, soap, biscuits,... to sell. Families that have an aditionnal income because now they can sell their products at our feria. And personally it's been a year of a lot of warmth: litteraly, with 360 days of sunshine in Pespire, but also because of the trust that all those women have given me, being a foreigner, all those tortillas they've fed me, every hammock they let down for me, every door put open, every reunion they attend.
It's been a beautiful year, but it is also time for me to recharge my batteries a little so I am leaving for a couple of weeks to Belgium, to see my familiy and friends. So till next year, and in the meantime:

Despedida Jacopo

Jacopos contract is afgelopen en zijn tijd in Pespire zit erop. Maar goede collega's als wij zijn, laten we niemand gaan zonder een klein feestje.
Plaats: de patio van mijn huis.
Uur: tot in de kleine uurtjes van de nacht.
Mee te brengen: veel plaats in de maag voor spijs en drank, stevige beentjes voor serieus wat latino-dansen en uiteraard het fototoestel voor de beschamende foto's. Wie: alle collega's van ADEPES (en blijkbaar was het een onuitgesproken afspraak om GEEN partners mee te brengen).
Gevolg: een feestje dat uitgedraaid is op HET schandaal van het dorp (waar anders nooit iets gebeurt), waarvan letterlijk ELKE dorpeling gedurende een week van heeft gesmuld.
Opmerking: een waardig afscheid - onze reputatie hier was sowieso al naar de vaantjes (grijns, grijns)

Jacopos contract is finished and his time in Pespire is over. But being the fab collegues that we are, we are not letting anyone go without a little party.
Place: the patio of my house
Hour: till morning comes.
To bring: a lot of room in the stomache for food and drinks, firm legs for some serious Latino-dancing and off course the camera for the pictures destined for the Wall of Shame
Who: all collegues from ADEPES (who apparently silently agreed NOT to bring their respective partners)
Consequence: a party that turned out to be THE scandal of the village (where nothing ever happens) and the talk of town for the rest of the week.
Remark: a decent farewell - our reputation here was already (LOL)

stupiditeiten / stupidities

Als ik hier in Honduras zou kunnen stemmen, dan hadden de kanditaat-burgemeesters maar beter een serieus tandje bijgestoken...
De campagnes lopen volop en vorig weekend waren de 3 kanditaten uitgenodigd op een evenement van ADEPES - de NGO waarvoor ik werk. Kandidaat 1 had duidelijk zijn eigen powerpointpresentatie niet zelf geschreven en - wat erger was - kon die zelfs niet lezen. Kandidaat 2 presteerde het om "Euh, nee, of misschien toch wel, euh, laat me hierover eens denken..." te antwoorden op de vraag van 1 van mijn dames of ie plannen had om de positie van de vrouw te verbeteren en de vrouwenrechten te vrijwaren. Ik was wel apetrots op Veronica, een dame uit 1 van mijn groepen, die de vraag gesteld had! Kandidate 3 slaagde erin te melden dat het antwoord op het alcohol en drugsgebruik bij jongeren aan te pakken erin bestaat om... God terug in de families te brengen en om de enige feestzaal in Pespire te sluiten wegens teveel feesten. Tja, 4 feesten per jaar IS inderdaad veel (AARGH!!). En God terugbrengen?? Geloof me, hier heeft God echt geen marketing nodig! Wat de jongeren hier nodig hebben is gezonde afleiding: een bibliotheek, een jeugdhuis, een fitness, een pingpongtafel, muziek- en danslessen,... DAT zou nuttig zijn!
De ene stupiditeit volgde de andere op. Gelukkig voor hen, kan ik niet stemmen. En aangezien we volgend jaar de goodwill van 1 van hen nodig hebben, heb ik - geheel tegen karakter in - op mijn tong gebeten tot die blauw zag. Helaas voor hen, gaan mijn vrouwen wel stemmen en hebben mijn dames ondertussen een zelfvertrouwen en mondigheid om bijzonder trots op te zijn. Dat maakte het afsluitend debat een fraai stukje om te volgen. 1-0 voor mijn vrouwen!!

If I could vote here in Honduras, the candidates for Mayor of Pespire had better step it up several notches...
The campaigns are in full swing and last weekend, the 3 candidates were invited to attend an event of ADEPES - the NGO I work for. Candidate 1 clearly did not write his own powerpoint presentation and - what's worse - couldn't even read it. Candidate 2 had the brilliant response "Eh, no, or maybe yes, eh, let me think..." ready to the question of 1 of my ladies if he had plans to improve the position of women and to protect womens' rights. I certainly was very proud of Veronica, a woman of 1 of my groups, who put forward the question! Candidate 3 beat them all by stating that the answer to deal with abuse of alcohol and drugs by youngsters is... to bring God back in the families and to close the only partyhall in Pespire because there are to many parties given there. Sure, 4 events a year IS way to much (AARGH!!). And bring back God?? Trust me, the last thing God needs here is marketing! What youngsters here need is some healthy entertainment: a library would be good, a club for juveniles, a fitness, a pingpongtable, music and dance classes would be nice,... Now THAT would be usefull!
One stupidity followed the other. Luckily for them, I can't vote. And since we need the goodwill of 1 of them next year, I -completely out of character- bit my tongue untill it was blue. Unfortunately for them, my women can vote and have by now a confidence and concienceness to be extremely proud off. As such, the debate was more than worthwhile to follow. 1-0 for my ladies!!

Homo Erectus

Mijn kleinste buurman is net 1 jaar geworden en zet sinds kort zijn eerste stapjes alleen: om op te vreten!

My smallest neighbour just celebrated his 1st birthday and has entered the world of the walking men: adorable!

tajaditas & frijoles

Familie en vrienden zijn al langer op de hoogte: ik ben niet direct een keukenprinses. Of van de understatement van de eeuw gesproken!
Gelukkig heb ik tot nu toe niet veel moeten koken. Mijn Italiaanse collega Jacopo - die een waanzinnig goede kok is - heeft die taak tot nu toe met veel genoegen op zich genomen. De deal is simpel: we leggen de inhoud van onze koelkasten samen (die van mij is dubbel zo groot als die van hem en bevat de helft zoveel bier - tja, rum bewaar je niet in de koelkast, he!), hij kookt en ik doe de afwas. Super deal, iedereen gelukkig.

Alleen zit Jacopo in het buitenland en sta ik er dus alleen voor. Voor het fornuis, wel te verstaan. Salades ben ik ondertussen beu en omeletten kan ik niet meer zien. In een vlaag van verstandsverbijstering besluit ik om de geheimen van de Hondurese keuken te ontsluieren. Dat betekent het bereiden van tajaditas, frijoles, platano con mantequilla, tortillas, baleadas en meer.

Dag 1: voor het eerst sinds mijn aankomst hier ga ik zelf frijoles klaarmaken. Frijoles op z'n Hondurees zijn geprakte bonen. Fluitje van een cent, dacht ik zo. Niet, dus! Trots pak ik mijn halve kilo bonen uit (minder verkopen ze hier echt niet!), laat de pot vol water lopen, gooi wat zout erin en breng de boel aan het koken. Nou weet ik wel dat bonen lang duren voor ze klaar zijn, maar 5 UREN??!! Gelukkig is mijn buurvrouw Ethel altijd even behulpzaam - zij het een beetje laat - en meldt me dat het zout pas NADIEN toegevoegd wordt omdat anders de bonen hard blijven. Ondertussen heb ik al pannekoeken gebakken en ze allemaal opgegeten...

Dag 2: Mijn bonen zijn dus voor vandaag, samen met tortillas. Ik heb speciaal maisbloem gekocht om ze zelf te maken. Maar euh... wat gaat er nog meer in? Ik gil: "ETHEL!" en daar komt de echte keukenprinses. Samen maken we de tortillas. Of liever: zij kneedt, rolt en draait zo'n 20 tortillas terwijl ik letterlijk nog aan mijn eerste bezig ben. Die tenandere nooit de pan ziet...

Dag 3: Tajaditas dan maar. Hoe moeilijk kunnen gefrituurde stukjes banaan zijn? Ethel stormt mijn keuken binnen op zoek naar haar 3-jarig zoontje Angel die in mijn living een kasteel van boeken aan het bouwen is. Vol afgrijzen bekijkt ze mijn keukenactiviteiten op en neemt direct de touwtjes in handen. "Querida, je hebt de verkeerde bananen gekocht!", waarop ze naar haar zus roept om de juiste te brengen. Hoe is dat nu mogelijk? Er zijn hier maar zo'n 15 verschillende soorten bananen/plantanen om uit te kiezen! "Verder doe je het zout erop VOORALEER ze in de olie te smijten en vervolgens moet je de tajaditas omdraaien eens ze bruin zien aan de ONDERKANT"...

Dag 4. Laatste poging. Platano met mantequilla. Ik heb nog bananen (plantanen) over van Ethel gisteren. Dus die zitten al goed. En de mantequilla (een soort kruising tussen room en boter) heb ik kant-en-klaar op onze feria gekocht. Dit kan niet missen! Wel, dus. Uit voorzorg laat ik Ethel mijn voorbereidingen superviseren. Een goede beslissing, want "Ay, amor! je gebruikt niet genoeg olie. En heb je zout in je mantequilla gedraaid vooraleer die in frigo ging?" Niet dus...

Ik denk dat ik het maar bij eten hou en het koken overlaat aan de professionals. Smakelijk!

Friens and family have known this forever: I am not exactly a princess in the kitchen. Or talk about the understatement of the century!

Fortunately I didn't need to cook up till now. My Italian collegue Jacopo - who is an amazing chef - has been fulfilling that task with pleasure. The deal is simpel: we put together the contents of our fridges(mine is twice as big as his and contains half the amount of beer - well, you don't store rum in the fridge, do you!) he cooks and I do the dishes. Perfect deal, everybody happy.

Except that Jacopo is abroad, so I am on my own. Cooking-wise off course. I am tired off eating salads all the time and omelettes are no good either anymore. So in a moment of complete crazyness I decide to unravel the secrets of the Honduran cuisine. That means the preparation of tajaditas, frijoles, platano con mantequilla, tortillas, baleadas and more.

Day 1: For the first time since my arrival I am going to prepare my own frijoles. Frijoles Honduran style are basically mashed beans. Easy, no? Well, nope... With pride I unpack my pound of beans (trust me, less is not available!), fill my pot with water, throw in some salt and bring the lot to boil. Now, I do know that beans take a while. But 5 HOURS??!! Luckily my neighbour Ethel is very helpfull, though always late, and informs me that the salt is added AFTERWARDS because otherwise the beans stay hard. In the meantime I have made pancakes and eaten them all...

Day 2: My beans are for today, together with tortillas. I've bought cornflower especially for the occasion. But euh... what else do they put in? I scream: "ETHEL!" and in comes the real kitchen princess. Togehter we make tortillas. Or better: she kneads, rolls and forms about 20 tortillas while I am still fighting my first one. One who by the way never made it to the frying pan...

Day 3: Tajaditas then. How hard can fried pieces of banana be? Ethel storms in, looking for her 3-year-old son Angel who is building a castle of books in my living room. She takes 1 look at my activities and inmediately takes over. "Querida, you bought the wrong plantains to do that!", upon which she yells to her sister to bring the right ones. How is that posible? There are only about 15 varieties of banans/plantains to choose from! "Furthermore, you should put the salt on BEFORE you put them in the oil and you need to turn the tajaditas when they are brown UNDERNEATH"...

Day 4. Last intent. Platano with mantequilla. I have some plantains left from Ethel yesterday. So that can't go wrong. And I bought the mantequilla (a mix between cream and butter) ready-to-go at our feria. This cannot be messed up! Boy, was I wrong. For good measure, I ask Ethel to supervise my preparations. Good move, because "Ay, amor! You are not using enough oil. And did you put salt in the mantequilla before keeping it in your fridge?" Not...

I think it best to stick to the consumption of the food and leave the cooking to the professionals. Enjoy your meal!

beestenboel / animal farm

Nu ben ik wel een fan van dieren, maar dit was toch een beetje veel van het goede.
Mijn collega Karla en ik hadden een afspraak met onze dames in Carrizal, een huizengroep die sowieso bovenaan onze top 10 van moeilijk te bereiken plaatsen prijkt in het droogseizoen. In het regenseizoen (nu dus) is het echter een bijna onmogelijke opdracht. De enige volwaardige weg ernaartoe is op dit moment onbegaanbaar. Er is echter een alternatieve weg, die een klim van een uur impliceert. Dus wij, zwaar mentaal voorbereid, vroeg op weg. Maar blijkbaar waren onze dames niet overtuigd van onze fysieke capaciteiten om deze klim te volbrengen en hadden transport georganiseerd. Ik kan met enige opluchting melden dat ik voor het eerst van mijn leven een rit overleefd heb op... een ezel! En neen, ik heb er geen foto's van - ik had het te druk met mij wanhopig vast te klemmen aan de ezel!
Na een bijzonder leuke en productieve dag met onze dames, daalden Karla en ik - deze keer op eigen kracht - terug de berg af naar onze moto's, waar we vervolgens een paar onverwachte aspirant motorijders moesten ontmoedigen. Een paar heel nieuwsgierige geiten waren volop aan het testen of ze onze banden en zadels konden beklimmen. En geloof me, het beviel ze reusachtig, want ze waren met geen stokken van ons gemotoriseerd transport weg te krijgen!
Eens thuis was ik aan het bekomen van de dag, toen een volgend probleem zich aandiende. Als er iemand ooit een volwassen iguana uit zijn keuken moet verjagen, bel me: ik heb de nodige expertise nu! In Honduras leer je elke dag weer iets bij...

Now, I am a fan of animals, but this was a bit much.
My collegue Karla and I had a meeting with our ladies in Carrizal, a group of houses that tops our top-10-list of places hard to reach, even in dry season. In the wet season (as in, right now)it is damn near mission impossible. The only road worthy the name is currently not doable. However, there is an alternative route, which implies a steep climb of an hour.
So we left early, mentally prepared for the task ahead. But apparently, our ladies were not convinced about our physical capacities and arranged transport. With great relief, I can announce that for the first time in my life I survived a ride on the back of... a donkey! And no, there are no pictures as I was to occupied to desperately hold on to the donkey...
After a very pleasant and productive day, Karla and I made our way back down the mountain - on our 2 feet - towards our motobikes. There waited us the task to dissuade some unexpected aspirant motoriders. A couple very curious goats were in the middle of testing if they could climb our tires and sadles. And believe me, they loved it, cause it proved extremely difficult to chase them away from our vehicles!
Back home, I was recovering from my experiences that day, when the next problem announced itself. If anyone ever needs to evict an adult iguana from his kitchen, call me: I am the expert now!!
Truly, there is something new to learn in Honduras every day...

wereldbeker / worldcup

Zelf geen voetbalfan, maar voor de Hondurezen een waanzinnig feestje waard: Honduras speelt mee in de wereldbeker 2010! Na een overwinning (0-1) op El Salvador en een gelijkspel tussen Costa Rica en de VS, is Honduras voor het eerst in 27 jaar verzekerd van een plaats in Zuid-Afrika. Benieuwd hoevelen morgen fris op het werk zullen verschijnen... :p

Not a soccerfan myself, but a huge party for the Hondurans: Honduras will play in the worldcup 2010! After defeating El Salvador (0-1) and a draw between Costa Rica and the US, Honduras is sure to play in South Africa for the first time in 27 years. I`m curious to see how many will show up at work with a clear head tomorrow... :p

druk, druk, druk... / busy, busy, busy,...

Even geen politiek in dit verslag, maar een kleine anecdote uit mijn eigen leventje.
De afgelopen weken zijn hectisch geweest. Ik heb er een paar nieuwe groepen dames bij en dat betekent alle dagen de hort op. Mij hoor je niet klagen - blij als een kind als ik kan rondcrossen!! Het enige probleem is dat mijn moto zich durft te gedragen als een lastige tiener. Neem nu vanmorgen. Afspraak om 9:00 in Terrero de Concepcion, een klein groepje huizen hoog in de bergen. Om daar te geraken moet ik eerst een rivier door - iets waar mijn moto tegenstribbelend doorglibbert. Vervolgens gaat de weg steil omhoog over rotsen, zand, stenen, putten,... Ik word nog een echte motocrosser! Maar vanochtend had mijn moto niet veel zin en sloeg ie constant af. Het was nogal een plaatje: ik, vloekend in verschillende talen op een steil stuk omhoog proberend mijn moto in gang te trappen terwijl naast mij een ezel geamuseerd het hele gebeurgen gadeslaagt. Ik heb wel gebalk als aanmoediging gekregen toen ik eindelijk weer op gang was! Het leven zoals het is...

For now, no politics, but a small anecdote from my life here. The last couple of weeks were really hectic. I've got some additional groups of ladies and that means working in the field every day. But you won't hear me complain - I'm happy as can be if I can cross around!! The only problem is that my motorbike tends to behave itself as a spoiled teenager. Take this morning. Meeting at 9:00 in Terrero de Concepcion, a small group of houses way up in the mountains. To get there I've got to cross a river - something my motorbike reluctantly does - skiding from one side to another. then it goes up steeply over rocks, sand, stones, holes,... I am slowly but surely on my way to become a professional motocrosser! But this morning, my bike didn't feel like it and turned off constantly. it was quite the scene: me, cursing loudly in different languages, on a steep hill trying to kickstart my bike while next to me a donkey is watching my every move with high amusement. I did get his loud approval when I finally got on my way again! Life as it is...

Verlies der vrijheden / Loss of freedom

De repressie maatregelen van de De Facto regering stapelen zich op. In een poging om alle informatie tegen de De Facto regering te verijdelen, heeft de De Facto regering een decreet in het La Gazetta (Hondurees staatsblad) gepubliceerd dat voor de komende 45 dagen geen enkele bijeenkomst mag gebeuren zonder toelating van leger of politie, dat eenieder die na de avondklok buiten gezien wordt onmiddellijk en zonder pardon gearresteerd wordt en dat alle radio- en tv-zenders "die statements maken die de vrede en publieke orde verstoren, of die de humane waardigheid van publieke ambtenaren aantasten, of de wet aanvallen." door politie en leger gesloten kunnen worden.

Het leger voerde vanochtend de daad bij het woord en viel met een 200 (!) soldaten Radio Globo binnen. Radio Globo is 1 van de weinige radio-zenders die in Honduras informeren van de kant van het verzet. Het kantoor is volledig leeggehaald. Ook kanaal 36 (TV) is uit de ether gehaald.

Gisteren heeft de De Facto regering ook een delegatie van de Organisatie der Amerikaanse Staten het land uitgezet. De delegatie was gekomen om de onderhandelingen tussen Micheletti en Zelaya opnieuw leven in te blazen.

Bovendien heeft Micheletti Brazilie een ultimatum van 10 dagen gegeven om ofwel Zelaya - die zich nog steeds in de ambassade van Brazilie bevindt - uit te leveren of politiek asiel te verlenen. In het laatste geval moet Zelaya dan overgebracht worden naar Brazilie. De Braziliaanse president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva heeft daarop geantwoord dat Zelaya een gast is in de ambassade en dat hij geen ultimatums aanvaardt van een regering die aan de macht is gekomen door een staatsgreep.

Volgens buitenlands minister Lopez heeft Brazilie de relaties met Honduras verbroken en zegt dat als Brazilie de band niet hersteld, dat de ambassade een privaat kantoor wordt. Daarmee impliceerd hij dat de ambassade binnengevallen kan worden door de politie. Micheletti heeft ondertussen ontkend de ambassade binnen te zullen vallen, maar de dreiging blijft...

Ondanks uitspraken van Micheletti en zijn De Facto regering dat in Honduras alles goed gaat, zegt de realiteit duidelijk iets anders. Het volk wordt herhaaldelijk beroofd van zijn burgerrechten. Het recht van vrije meningsuiting, recht van vereniging en recht van bewegingsvrijheid zijn opgeschort. En dan hebben we het nog niet eens over de economische ramp dat dit land tegemoet gaat. Het toerisme is vrijwel nihil, de horeca lijdt enorme verliezen, taxichauffeurs en straatventers kunnen het hoofd niet meer boven water houden en de broodnodige buitenlandse hulp staat op een zeer laag pitje...


The measures of repression of the De Facto government just keep coming. In an attempt to stop all information against the De Facto government, it published a decree in La Gazetta stating that in the coming 45 days, no union can be held without permission of police or army, that anyone out after the curfew will be arrested without warrant (which is obligatory by Honduran law) and that all media who "make statements that attack peace or public order, offend the human dignity of public officials, or attack the law" will be closed by army or police.

This morning, the army acted on this by raiding Radio Globo with around 200 (!) soldiers. Radio Globo is 1 of the few radio-broadcasters in Honduras that support the resistance. The office of Radio Globo has been emptied completely. Also TV-channel 36 has been cut off.

Yesterday, the De Facto government also evicted a delegation of the Organisation of American States. The delegation had come to restart negotiations between Zelaya and Micheletti.

On top of that, Micheletti send Brazil an ultimatum of 10 days to either turn Zelaya over for arrest or grant him asylum and, presumably, take him out of Honduras. Zelaya still finds himself in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa. The Brazilian president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva answered by saying that Zelaya is a guest at the embassy and that he (Lula) does not accept ultimatums of "coup-plotters".

According to foreign minister Lopez, Brazil cut off the relations with Honduras and says that if Brazil does not restore the relations, the embassy will become a privat office. This implies that the embassy can be raided by the police. Micheletti denied planning to raid the embassy, but the threat stays...

In spite of statements of Micheletti and his De Facto government that Honduras is doing fine, the reality is quite different. The people are repeatedly robbed of their civil rights. The freedom of speech, freedom of union and freedom of movement are suspended. And then I haven't mentioned the ecomonical distaster yet that is coming down on this country. Tourism is reduced to next-to-nothing, restaurants and bars are making enormous losses, taxidrivers and streetsellers can't keep their heads above water and the so needed foreign aid has nearly come to a standstill...

Mel Zelaya's return!

Historisch moment in de geschiedenis van Honduras en keerpunt in de strijd van het Hondurese volk tegen de staatsgreep, nu 86 dagen geleden. Afgezette president Jose Manuel Zelaya Rosales is terug in Honduras. Gisteren is hij in Tegucigalpa aangekomen onder bescherming van de VN. Op dit moment verblijft hij in de ambassade van Brazilie. Onnodig te zeggen dat dit heel wat commotie veroorzaakt in het land. Duizenden mensen vierden de terugkeer van hun president in de straat voor de ambassade in Tegucigalpa.

De De Facto regering van Roberto Micheletti is echter nog steeds niet van plan om de macht uit handen te geven en de democratie in Honduras te herstellen. In tegendeel. De De Facto regering speelt paniekvoetbal en zorgt voor zoveel mogelijk chaos. De maatregelen en acties zijn heviger dan tijdens dagen na de coup op 28 Juni jongstleden:

Een 24-uren avondklok is opnieuw ingesteld, deze keer op nationaal niveau. Dit is duidelijk een maatregel om te supporters van het verzet en de aanhangers van Zelaya te verhinderen om hun steun te betuigen voor de ambassade van Brazilie. Maar tegelijkertijd willen ze hiermee ook verhinderen dat meer opposanten van de regering naar Tegucigalpa afzakken. De avondklok wordt echter genegeerd door het grootste gedeelte van de bevolking wegens niet wettelijk, wat repressie van de politie met zich meebrengt.

Alle ingangen naar Tegucigalpa zijn geblokkeerd door de politie en het leger. Ook dit is om te verhinderen dat het volk kan komen protesteren tegen de De Facto regering.

De electriciteit is op verschillende plaatsen afgesloten.

Mobiele telefoons werkten gisteren lange tijd niet. De netwerken warden opzettelijk opgeschort om mobilisatie te voorkomen en de verspreiding van informatie tegen te gaan.

Alle luchthavens van het land zijn gesloten. Vandaag, dinsdag 22 september, zouden verschillende leiders van verscheidene Latijns-Amerikaanse landen, waaronder ook mediator Arias van Costa Rica, naar Honduras komen om de dialoog op te nemen. Micheletti wil duidelijk geen vreedzame gesprekken voeren om de situatie op te lossen.

Radio Globo, Canal 36 en een paar andere media die de De Facto regering veroordelen, worden om de haverklap of zelfs permanent uit de ehter gehaald om ervoor te zorgen dat het volk ongeinformeerd blijft. De media die de staatsgreep steunen verspreiden valse en verdraaide informatie, oa dat Zelaya zich in Brazilie bevindt en dat het verhaal dat hij in Honduras is slechts een strategie is van het verzet om het volk tegen de De Facto regering op te zetten. Daarbij vergeten ze wel te vermelden dat Zelaya zich in de ambassade van Brazilie bevindt (idd Braziliaans grondgebied, maar wel in gelegen in de hoofdstad van Honduras) en dat Zelaya op het balkon verschenen is om te bevestigen dat hij wel degelijk terug is.

Politie en leger treden nog agressiever op dan voorheen. Hoewel de demonstranten voor de ambassade ongewapend zijn, passief hun steun betuigen en voor een groot deel bestaan uit vrouwen, kinderen en ouderen van dagen hebben ze afgelopen nacht traangasbommen en rubber kogels gebruikt in een poging de menigte uiteen te drijven. Arrestaties en geweldplegingen door politie en leger worden uitgevoerd zonder waarschuwing of duidelijke aanleiding.

En het duidelijkste bewijs dat Micheletti en zijn De Facto regering met hun rug tegen de muur staan is het feit dat ze de ambassade van Brazilie binnen willen vallen om Mel Zelaya te arresteren. Als ze dit doorzetten, staat dat gelijk aan een oorlogsverklaring aan Brazilie aangezien de ambassade Braziliaans grondgebied is. In dat geval zal het hek helemaal van de dam zijn.

Maar ondanks al deze repressiemaatregelen en misinformatie die circuleert, is de euforie en de hoop van het volk groot. Mensen van alle slag uit alle hoeken van het land mobiliseren zich in Tegucigalpa, meer dan ooit bereid om tot het uiterste te gaan om de democratie te herstellen. De komende week betekent een belangrijk keerpunt en zolang internet blijft werken, hou ik jullie op de hoogte!

En zoals de slogan van het verzet stelt: “El pueblo unido, jamas sera vencido!” (Een verenigd volk zal nooit verslagen worden!)



Historical moment in the history of Honduras and a turning point in the fight of the Honduran people against the coup d’etat, now 86 days ago. Ousted president Jose Manuel Zelaya Rosales is back in Honduras. He arrived yesterday in Tegucigalpa under the protection of the UN. At this moment he stays at the embassy of Brazil. Unnecessary to mention that this stirred up a lot of commotion in the country. Thousands of people celebrate the return of their president in the streets in front of the embassy of Brazil in Tegucigalpa.

The De Facto government of Roberto Micheletti, however, has no intentions to give up their power and to restore democracy in Honduras. On the contrary. The De Facto government is clearly panicking and is creating chaos where it can. The measures and actions taken are heavier than those during the days after the coup on the 28th of June 2009.

A 24-hour curfew has been imposed again, this time on national level. This clearly is an attempt to impede the supporters of the resistance and the followers of Zelaya to show their support outside the embassy of Brazil. But at the same time, they want to prevent more opponents of the De Facto government to come to Tegucigalpa. The curfew is mostly ignored by great part of the population since it is not constitutional, which brings along repression by part of the police.

All entrances to Tegucigalpa are blocked by the police and army. This too to prevent the people from coming into the capital to protest against the De Facto government.

Electricity has been cut off at different places.

Mobile phones didn’t work for quite some time yesterday. The nets wore suspended on purpose in order to avoid mobilization and the spread of information.

All airports in the country are closed. Today, 22nd of September 2009, several leaders of Latin-American countries, among them mediator Arias of Costa Rica, were to come to Honduras to start a dialogue. Obviously, Micheletti does not want to undertake peaceful negotiations to solve the situation.

Radio Globo, Canal 36 and a few more media that condemn the De Facto government, are taken out of the air on regular basis or even permanently to make sure the people stay uninformed. The media that support the coup, spread false or twisted information, such as the rumor that Zelaya actually is in Brazil and that the story that he is in Honduras was only a strategy to or the resistance to set up the people against the government. They forget to mention though, that Zelaya finds himself in the embassy of Brazil (indeed Brazilian territory, but located in the capital of Honduras) and that Zelaya has appeared on the balcony to prove his return.

Police and army act even more violently than before. Though the demonstrators in front of the embassy are unarmed, protesting pacifically and are composed for the lion part out of women, children and elderly, they used teargas bombs and rubber bullets last night in an attempt to disperse the people. Arrests and violence by police and army are executed without warning or clear motive.
And the clearest sign that Micheletti and his De Facto government are standing with their back to the wall, is the fact that they want to invade embassy of Brazil to arrest Mel Zelaya. If they go through with this , that will equal a declaration of war against Brazil as the embassy is Brazilian territory. In that case, hell will break loose.

But in spite of all these measures of repression and all misinformation that circulates, euphoria and hope among the people is high. All sorts of people from all corners of Honduras mobilize in Tegucigalpa and are more than ever prepared to do what it takes to restore democracy. The upcoming week will represent an important turning point and as long as internet keeps working, I will keep you posted!

And as said by the slogan of the resistance: “El pueblo unido, jamas sera vencido!” (A nation united will never be defeated!)

Dia del nino!

Het was me het weekje wel. Het eens zo rustige Pespire heeft nog maar zelden zoveel buitenlanders tegelijk gezien. Mijn Italiaanse collega had een koppel Engelse wielertoeristen op bezoek (Kelly en Dave) en ik heb een Canadees koppel wielertoeristen (Emily en Maxim) te slapen gelegd. Alle 4 hebben ze genoten van een paar dagen rust, bezoekjes aan onze projecten, gezellige avonden en - in het geval van Emily en Maxim - een paar dagen feest en uitstapjes in Tegucigalpa.
En net toen Kelly en David weer op hun pedalen zijn beginnen trappen, kreeg ik bericht dat Julie terug in het land was. Julie is een vriendin uit Belgie die momenteel door Centraal-Amerika reist en die in Mei hier de boel al onveilig gemaakt had. Full house, dus!!

Ondertussen bleef het werk echter doorgaan, wat betekent dat ik bijna alle dagen mijn vrouwen ben gaan bezoeken. Maar het was niet allemaal zwaar werk. 10 September is Dag van het Kind en dat betekent: taart en pinatas!!!

It's been quite the week. The once so quiet Pespire has seldom seen so many foreigners at the same time. My Italian colleague had a couple of English cyclists on visit (Kelly en Dave) and I had a Canadian couple of cyclists on sleepover (Emily en Maxim). All 4 enjoyed a couple of days of rest, visits to our proyects, pleasant evenings and - in the case of Emily en Maxim - a couple of days partying and touristic visits in Tegucigalpa.
And just when Kelly and David hit the road again, I got news that Julie was back in the country. Julie is a friend from Belgium who is travelling Central America at the moment and who passed through last May. Full house, it was!!

In the meantime, work continued, which meant going up to visit my women nearly every day. But it wasn't all hard work. The 10th of Septmber we celebrated Day of the Children, and that meant: cake and pinatas!!!

Ik kan uiteraard geen nieuw verhaal uit Honduras beginnen zonder een update over de politieke crisis.
Het akkoord van San Jose is nog steeds niet aanvaard door de De Facto regering. Sterker nog, deze regering heeft gemeld de rest van de wereld niet nodig te hebben, ondanks het feit dat Honduras 1 van de armste landen van Latijns-Amerika is. Ze gaan dus gewoon verder met wat ze vooropgesteld hebben. Dat betekent dat begin deze maand de electorale campagnes begonnen zijn in de aanloop van de verkiezingen van 29 November. De internationale gemeenschap en een groot deel van de Hondurese bevolking erkennen deze verkiezingen niet. De reden is simpel. Een erkenning van de verkiezingen doorgevoerd door een De Facto regering zou een erkenning zijn van het recht van deze regering om verkiezingen te houden. Maw het zou een erkenning van de De Facto regering betekenen.
De VS heeft vorige week een drukkingsmiddel ingezet. Sinds vorige week worden geen visa voor de VS meer uitgereikt aan Hondurezen, tenzij voor dringende redenen of voor migratiedoeleinden. Dat betekent oa dat Hondurese ondernemers niet meer op zakenreis kunnen naar de VS en dat de bemiddelde Hondurees geen familie meer kan bezoeken ginder. Wetende dat zowat elke Hondurese familie wel 1 of meer leden in de VS heeft en dat meer dan 50% van de export uit dit land richting VS gaat, kan deze maatregel vrij effectief uitpakken. Immers, het zijn de rijke families die de staatsgreep steunen. Maar als zij rechtstreeks (financieel) geraakt worden, is het mogelijk dat zij hun steun aan de De Facto regering terugtrekken.


Obviously, I can't write a new entry about Honduras without giving an update about the policical crisis.
The agreement of San Jose is still not accepted by the De Facto government. Even worse, this government claims not to need the rest of the world, even though Honduras is 1 of the poorest countries in Latin America. They keep going down the road they planned out from the beginning. That means that at the beginning of this month, the electoral campaigns have started in preparation for the elections on the 29th of November. The international community and a big part of the Honduran people are not aknowledging these elections. The reason is simpel. Aknowledging the elections would represent aknowledging the right of the De Facto government to actually organise the elections. In other words, it would mean aknowledging the De Facto government itself.
The US has heightened the pressure on the actual government last week by denying US visa to all Hondurans, except for emergencies or migratory reasons. This means that Honduran undertakers cannot go on business trips to the US and that the well-off Hondurans cannot go and visit their familymembers in the States. Knowing that virtually every Honduran family has familly in the US and that more than 50% of the exports out of Honduras is destined for the US, the pressure could well be quite effective. After all, it's the rich who support the coup, but if they get hit directly (through money), it is well possible that they withdraw their support to the De Facto government.

De laatste 2 weken ben ik een beetje afgesneden geweest van nieuws over de politieke situatie in Honduras: ik heb geen TV en internet had weer vele kuren. Bovendien zit ik momenteel in San Salvador voor een cursus over solidaire economie. Maar ik hoop jullie en mijzelf volgende week stevig bij te kunnen benen!

The previous weeks I've been cut off a bit from the latest on the political situation in Honduras: I have no TV and internet was being stubborn again. Also, at the moment I am in San Salvador for a course on solidary economy. But I hope to catch up with the news next week and feed you all information I can get my hands on!

De crisis duurt voort / The crisis continues

De politieke crisis in Honduras blijft voortduren. De onderhandelingen tussen de de facto president Roberto Micheletti en de afgezette president Mel Zelaya onder leiding van de president Oscar Arias van Costa Rica lijken te zijn vastgelopen, hoewel er nog op antwoorden gewacht wordt.
Hoewel er absoluut geen burgeroorlog plaatsheeft in Honduras, wordt de situatie wel grimmiger. De manifestaties in Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula en andere steden blijven voortduren en het volk laat steeds luider van zich horen. De grens met Nicaragua is gesloten en in de grensgebieden met Nicaragua is een permanente avondklok geinstalleerd. Dat houdt in dat de mensen letterlijk hun huis niet uitmogen. Zelfs boodschappen doen is vrijwel onmogelijk. De huidige De Facto regering doet er alles aan om de situatie onder controle te houden en zo de resistentie-beweging (i.e. de beweging die tegen de De Facto regering is) de mond te snoeren. Zo wil de regering Radio Globo, de enige radiozender op nationaal vlak die de staatsgreep verwerpt, uit de ether halen. (De andere radiozenders zijn allemaal in handen van rijke Hondurezen die de staatsgreep steunen). Ook kranten en TV rapporteren heel subjectief over de situatie. Ook deze media zijn zowat allemaal in handen van (vriendjes van) de regering. Het leger en de politie halen zeer aggresief uit tegen reporters, maar ook tegen manifestanten. Velen worden "preventief" opgepakt en/of in elkaar geslagen. Het dodental ligt ondertussen op 9 - allemaal mensen uit het verzet.
Desondanks blijft het volk zich verbeten verzetten. Deze week was er protest in de universiteit UNAH (Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Honduras) in Tegucigalpa. Dit prostest is fors de kop in gedrukt oa door de Cobras, de speciaal getrainde eenheid van de nationale politie, met traangas en waterkanon. Vandaag hebben manifestanten het kantoor van TIGO ingenomen, 1 van de nationale telefonicabedrijven die als "golpista" oftewel medestander van de staatsgreep geidentificeerd is. Er loopt ook een mars van een paar dagen helemaal uit het zuiden van Honduras naar de hoofdstad.
1 Ding is duidelijk, de situatie is zeker nog niet opgelost...

The political crisis in Honduras continues. The negociations between the De Facto president Roberto Micheletti and former president Mel Zelaya, headed by president Oscar Arias van Costa Rica seem to be paralysed, though they are still waiting for anwers.
Though one cannot at all speak about a civil war in Honduras, it is clear that the situation is getting harsher by the day. The manifestations in Tegucigalpa, San Pedro Sula and other cities continue and the people is speaking louder and louder. The border with Nicaragua is closed and in the areas around the border, a permanent curfew has been installed. This means that one cannot leave ones house. Including going for groceries is nearly impossible. The actualDe Facto government is doing all it can to keep the situation under control and to shut up the resistence. One of the measures is to take Radio Globo, the only radio on national level that rejects the coup, out of the air. (All other radiostations are in hands of rich Hondurans who simpatize with the coup) Newspapers and TV are also reporting very subjectively on the situation. These media are all in hands of (friends of) the government too. The army and police are reacting very aggressively against reporters, but also against participants of the manifestations. Loads are being arrested 'for prevention" and/or beaten up. Up till today, 9 people died, all people resisting the De Facto government.
Despite of that, the people continues its fierce resistence. This week, students of the University UNAH (Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Honduras) in Tegucigalpa protested. This prostet was ended forcefully, partly by the Cobras, a specially trained nacional police unit, with teargas and a water canon. Today, the offices of TIGO, 1 of the national telecom companies considered to be "golpista" or supporter of the coup, were taken by manifestors, There is also a march of a couple of days going from the mere south to the capital.
1 thing is sure: this is not the end...

Een bewogen week / A full week

Vorige vrijdag ben ik teruggekeerd uit El Salvador, waar Volens een reünie van alle coöperanten in CA4 (Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador en Guatemala) organiseerde. Een leuke 2-daagse tijdens de welke we elkaar allemaal hebben leren kennen en ideeën hebben kunnen uitwisselen. Daags ervoor hebben een paar van ons vergaderd over een werkmethode en bovendien hebben Heleen - mijn collega uit Nicaragua - en ik samen een "intercambio" georganiseerd. Een intercambio houdt in dat we 2 landbouwers of - zoals in ons geval vrouwen - naar een andere plaats sturen voor een week om van andere landbouwers of vrouwen te leren. Zo hebben we samen 2 Nicaraguaanse vrouwen en 2 Hondurese vrouwen meegenomen naar een gemeenschap in Perquin, El Salvador, om daar een week samen met de lokale families te leven, te produceren en te verkopen. Een hele ervaring voor vrouwen die vaak nog nooit buiten hun gemeente - laat staan in een ander land geweest zijn! Het eten is anders, de gebruiken, zelfs het Spaans!


Gelukkig verliepen de heen-en terugreis vlot (gezien de huidige crisis was dat een zorgpunt) behalve dan voor mij. De Salvadoriaanse douane heeft mij er bij terugkeer naar Honduras van beschuldigd dat ik mijn visum met 1 dag (!) overschreden had en heeft mij een boete van slechts (!)60 dollar gegeven. Bovendien gaven ze mij 5 dagen om de CA4 te verlaten. Dit ondanks mijn protesten en argumenten dat mijn visum nog geldig was. Ik ben dan ook linea recta naar de migratiedienst van Tegucigalpa gegaan, waar ze mij absoluut gelijk gegeven hebben, de 5 dagen geannuleerd en een verlenging van een maand gegeven hebben... Nu eens kijken of ze mij aan de Salvadoriaanse grens mijn 60 gestolen dollars terug gaan geven... Ach, hoop doet de zotten in vreugde leven, zeggen ze!

Dat betekent dat ik het weekend in Tegucigalpa heb doorgebracht, waar niets spectaculairs gebeurd is sinds vorige week het vliegtuig van Mel Zelaya niet mocht landen. Maar waar de protesten tegen de ondemocratische staatsgreep door blijven gaan!! Foto's volgen!

Last friday I returned from El Salvador, where Volens organised a reunion for all cooperants within the CA4 (Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador en Guatemala). It made for a nice couple of days during which we all got the chance to get to know each other and to exchange ideas. The days before, a couple of us had been working around a metodology and on top of that, Heleen - my collegue from Nicaragua - and I organised a "intercambio" together. An intercambio is about sending 2 farmers or -as in our case - women to another place for a week to learn from other farmers or women. That is how we took along 2 Nicaraguan and 2 Honduran women to a community in Perquin, El Salvador, to live, produce and sell with the local families during a week. A big experience for women who often have never left their community - let alone their country! The food is different, the customs, even the Spanish!

Fortunately, the trips went smoothly (which due to the crisis was a big question mark). Except for me. Upon returning to Honduras, the Salvadoran customs decided I overstayed my visum with 1 day (!). Despite my protests and arguments that this was not true, they gave me fine of 60 (!) dollars and 5 days to leave CA4. After that, I went straight to migracion in Tegucigalpa - still shaking with anger - where they proved me completely right, cancelled the 5 days and gave me another month to stay in Honduras... Now I'm about to see if the Salvadorans are going to reimburse the 60 dollars they stole... Oh well, there is a saying in Dutch that says: "Hope makes the foolish live in peace".

That does mean I spend the weekend in Tegucigalpa, where nothing spectacular happened after last week when the plane of Mel Zelaya was not allowed to land. But the protests against the undemocratical coup continue!! Photographs will follow!!

Veel mogelijkheid om te schrijven heb ik nu niet. Ik zit namelijk in een klein dorpje in El Salvador - net als Mel Zelaya - voor het werk. Hier komt even weinig info door als in Honduras, maar ik probeer een beetje bij te blijven via internet. Onder de newslinks vinden jullie 2 nieuwe berichten uit de media over de laatste gebeurtenissen. Hopelijk kan ik jullie meer melden in de komende dagen.

Crisis in Honduras

En de gebeurtenissen volgen elkaar op. Ondertussen heeft de internationale pers (eindelijk!) het nieuws van de situatie in Honduras opgepikt, maar ik wil jullie toch meegeven hoe het hier door de mensen beleefd wordt. Eigenlijk is de situatie op dit moment vrij kalm: de supermarkten en winkels zijn open, de mensen gaan werken,... Enkel rond het presidentieel paleis zijn er manifestaties en het leger is zichtbaar aanwezig in Tegucigalpa.
Zondag heeft het leger een staatsgreep gepleegd en de nu ex-president Manuel Zelaya uit zijn bed gelicht en naar Costa Rica afgevoerd. Daarop heeft het Congres Roberto Micheletti, de vice-president, ingezworen als nieuwe president. In Honduras is gedurende 48 uur de avondklok ingesteld. Om 21.00u moeten we allemaal braaf naar huis. Helaas is er niet veel op TV want de meeste (informatieve) zenders worden om de haverklap uit de ether gehaald. Veel informatie krijgen we hier dus niet. Gelukkig hebben we ondertussen wel terug electriciteit en werken de GSM's en telefoonlijnen opnieuw.
Volgens de laatste berichten zit Manuel Zelaya nu in Nicaragua te vergaderen met Hugo Chavez (Venezuela), Daniel Ortega (Nicaragua), Evo Morales (Bolivia) en nog een paar leiders. De Organisatie voor Amerikaanse Staten (OEA in het Spaans voor wie de berichten van hier leest) heeft de nieuwe regering niet aanvaard en ook verschillende internationale organisaties en landen (oa de EU en VS)hebben de terugkeer van Zelaya geëist. Er wordt over een sluiting van de grenzen van Honduras gesproken, maar dat is nog geen definitieve beslissing.
Persoonlijk reis ik morgen, dinsdag, terug naar Pespire en wacht ik af wat de volgende dagen brengen. Voorlopig maak ik mij geen zorgen en gaat het leven gewoon door. Ik houd jullie op de hoogte!

And the events keep coming. In the meantime the international press has (finally!) caught wind of the political situation in Honduras, but I still would like to inform you about the perspective of the people here. Actually, things are pretty calm at the moment: supermarkets and shops are open, people go to work, ... Only around the presidential palace are there manifestations and the army is visibly present in Tegucigalpa.
Last sunday, the army performed a "coup d'etat" and lifted the now ex-president Manuel Zelaya out of is bed to send him to Costa Rica. Upon that, the Congres has sworn Roberto Micheletti, vice-president, in as the new president of Honduras. In the next 48 hours, an evening curfew was installed, meaning we all have to be good children and be home by 21h. Unfortunately there is not much on TV as most of the (informative) chains are barred from broadcasting every so often. So we do not get much information. Luckily electricity has been restored and mobiles and landlines are working again. According to the latest news, Manuel Zelaya is now in Nicaragua with Hugo Chavez (Venezuela), Daniel Ortega (Nicaragua), Evo Morales (Bolivia) and a few other leaders. The Organisation for American States (OEA in Spanish for those who follow the newsflashes in Spanish) has not approved the new government and various international organisations and countries (oa The EU and US) are demanding the return of Zelaya. There are talks about closing the frontiers of Honduras, but that is not official yet.
As for me, tomorrow, Tuesday, I return to Pespire and will see what the next couple days bring. As for now, I am not really worried and life just goes on. But I`ll keep you all posted!

la cuarta urna... 2

Hmm, ok, ik geef het toe. Het gedeelte van "waar gaat dit over" in mijn vorig stukje klopt blijkbaar niet helemaal. Ik was te snel met schrijven en elke uitleg die ik te horen krijg is anders. Volgens de laatste discussie gaat het referendum wel degelijk over het veranderen van de grondwet, alleen weet men niet wat de regering precies wil veranderen. Volgens sommigen is de achterliggende gedachte wel degelijk het aan de macht blijven van Manuel Zelaya, volgens anderen niet. De regering geeft geen preciese info over wat exact ze wil veranderen. Met andere woorden, de veranderingen zouden goed kunnen zijn voor de minder gegoede bevolking, maar evenzeer puur eigenbelang kunnen blijken. Blijkbaar is dat af te wachten.
Feit blijft dat het referendum op onzuivere manier verloopt en dat het Honduras in een politieke crisis heeft gestort.

Eergisterenavond heeft president Manuel Zelaya generaal Romeo Vásquez Velásquez uit zijn ambt ontzet. Generaal Vásquez Velásquez weigerde het order van de president om zondag in te staan voor de veiligheid in te willigen. Eerder had het Hoog Gerechtshof het referendum als illegaal verklaard, maar de president wil er toch mee doorgaan. Na de beslissing van Mel om de generaal te ontslagen, hebben het hoofd van het leger, van de zeemacht en van de luchtmacht hun ontslag gegeven uit solidariteit met Generaal Vásquez Velásquez. Vandaag heeft het Nacionaal Congres het ontslag van de generaal verworpen omdat niemand ontslagen kan worden voor het weigeren van meewerking aan een illegaal verklaarde actie.

Hmm, ok, I admit. The part "what is it all about" in my last piece appears not to be completely correct. I was to quick in writing and every explanation I get is different. According to the last discuccion, the ballot really is about changing the consitution, only no one seems to know what the government pretends to change. Some stick to the reasoning that Manuel Zelaya does it all to keep in power, others think differently. The government does not give any information about what it is they want to change. In other words, the changes could well be good for the poor people of this country, but they could just as well be purely in favour of the president and his friends. Apparently we'll have to wait and see.
Fact is, the ballot is being held illegaly and it has brought Honduras into a political crisis.

The day before yesterday president Manuel Zelaya has dismissed General Romeo Vásquez Velásquez because he had said that the army would not comply with the presidents order to provide security during the ballot on Sunday. Earlier, the Supreme Court had ruled the ballot illegal but president Zelaya insists on going ahead with the ballot. After the decision of Mel to fire the general, the heads of Navy, Airforce and landforce all resigned out of solidarity with generalVásquez Velásquez.
Yesterday, the Nacional Congress rejected the dismissal of the general, arguing that nobody can be fired for refusing to cooperate with an illegal action.

la cuarta urna...

Politiek is gecompliceerd in de meeste landen. Maar in een ontwikkelingsland als Honduras komt daar nog een extra dimensie bij: corruptie en machtsmisbruik.
Op zondag 28 juni 2009 houdt de regering een referendum, la cuarta urna genaamd. Waar gaat dit over? Honduras kent een lange geschiedenis van dictaturen. Daarom staat in de huidige grondwet dat een gekozen president wel herverkozen mag worden, maar niet in 2 opeenvolgende termijnen. De huidige president - Manuel Zelaya, "Mel" voor de vrienden (en vijanden) - houdt echter wel van zijn postje. Hij heeft dan ook besloten om Hugo Chavez van Venezuela te imiteren. Hij wil zich laten herverkiezen voor de volgende 4 jaar en houdt daarom volgende zondag een referendum om de grondwet te laten veranderen.
Wat houdt dit in? Als de bevolking "nee" stemt, dan gaan de verkiezingen in november dit jaar gewoon door en kan Mel zich niet kandidaat stellen. Als de bevolking "ja" stemt, dan kunnen die verkiezingen niet plaatsvinden omdat eerst de grondwet veranderd moet worden, wat een proces van zeer lange adem is. Dus sowieso blijft Mel dan aan de macht voor 1 of 2 jaren meer vooraleer er nieuwe verkiezingen kunnen komen. En vervolgens kan hij zich opnieuw kandidaat stellen voor een volgend aansluitend ambtstermijn.
Op zich is dit al niet echt kosjer. Maar wat de zaak die extra dimensie geeft zijn een aantal signalen die de cuarta urna controversieel maken. Zo is er de vraag wie de stemmen gaat tellen... De kans is groot dat er niet veel neutrale mensen bij de tellers gaan zitten. Bovendien is de regering bezig "bonos" uit te delen. Bonos zijn cheques of cadeaubonnen en om deze te bekomen, moeten de mensen enkel tekenen dat ze akkoord gaan met de cuarta urna. In een land als Honduras, waar het grootste gedeelte van de bevolking arm is, zijn die bonos een beproefd middel om een "Ja" getekend te krijgen. Weinigen kunnen immers weigeren...
Maar niet iedereen is zo makkelijk gewonnen voor een "Ja". Het leger zou het niet eens zijn met la cuarta urna en velen denken dat het leger een staatsgreep gaat plegen. Iets wat in Honduras al vaker gebeurd is.
Het beloofd dus een belangrijke zondag te worden. To be continued...

Politics are complicated in most of the countries. But in a development country as Honduras, politics come with an extra dimension: corruption and misuse of power.
Next Sunday, 28 of June 2009, the current government is holding a referendum, called la cuart urna. What is it about?
Honduras has known a long history of dictatorship. That is why the current constitution states that though a chosen president can be re-chosen, but not for 2 consecutive terms. The president in power however - Manuel Zelaya, "Mel" for his friends (and ennemies) - is quite liking position and has decided to imitate Hugo Chavez of Venezuela. He wants to be reelected for the next 4 years and is holding the referendum to be able to change the constitution.
What does this mean?
If the people vote "NO", elections will be held in november as forseen and Mel will not be able to be a candidate. If the people vote "yes",then it's gonna be a whole other ballgame. Elections in November will not be held, because first the constitution needs to be changed. This is a very long process, so mel will be in power for another 1 or 2 years before new elections can be evoked. On top of that, he'll be able to be candidate for another 4-year-term.
As such, this whole thing isn't exactly clean. However, it are the small signals that give this case that extra dimension and make la cuarta urna controversial. There is the question who will count the votes... Chances are there will not be many neutral people among the counters. Also, the government is busy handing out "bonos". Bonos are cheques or gift vouchers and to get these, one only needs to sign a paper stating he or she is in favour of la cuarta urna. In a country as Honduras, where a huge part of the people is poor, the bonos are a sure way to get a "yes" being signed. Few those who can refuse a bono...
However, not everyone agrees so easily. The army is said to be completely against la cuarta urna and many think the army is planning a coup d'etat. Something that has happened several times before in Honduras.

Huisdieren / pets

Jacopo, mijn Italiaanse collega, en ik hebben eens een balans opgemaakt van de huisdieren die we ondertussen verzameld hebben of beter - die we verzamelen of we nu willen of niet. Na de aardbeving is er in Jacopo's tuin een schildpad opgedoken die we Sismo hebben gedoopt. Verder zijn er een aantal vleermuizen die zich zeer thuis voelen in zijn slaapkamer en eetkamer. In mijn geval, zijn er de dikke padden die ik met de regelmaat van de klok uit mijn douche pluk. Op gezette tijden maak ik jacht op de kleine schorpioentjes die van "op blote voeten rondlopen" een extreme sport maken. En dan is er mijn vast huisdier, mijn gesprekspartner als ik 's morgens met een substantieel ochtendhumeur mijn douche binnenstap: Dominic. Dominic is de leguaan die mijn badkamer als zijn thuis beschouwd en die het voyeurisme tot edele kunst heeft verheven... Wie honden en katten had verwacht als huisdieren, zit in Honduras op het verkeerde adres!

Jacopo, my Italian collegue,and I have made little inventory of the pets we've collected so far, or better - the ones we collect wether we want to or not. After the earthquake, we discovered a turtle in Jacopo's garden which we baptised Sismo. His living room and bedroom give house to a couple of bats. In my case, you have the big toads I chase out of my shower on a very regular basis and the little scorpions I have to show the door because they make walking barefoot an extreme sport. And then of course there is my real pet, my fellow grunting partner when I am about to take my shower in the morning: Dominic. Dominic is the Iguana that lives in my shower and who has made from voyeurism a nobel art... He who had dogs and cats in mind as pets, has things all backwards when it comes to Honduras!

Aardbeving / Earthquake

Vannacht rond 1:00 h - Hondurese tijd - heeft er zich voor de Noordkust van Honduras een aardbeving voorgedaan van 7,1 op de schaal van Richter. Wat de situatie is in het Noorden is op dit moment nog niet bekend hier. Maar hier in het Zuiden is alles rustig. Naar het schijnt was de schok voelbaar, maar ikzelf ben er zelfs niet wakker van geworden. Jullie kunnen op jullie beide oren slapen: Pespire is nog even heet, slaperig en onverstoorbaar als altijd...

Last night at around 1:00 AM - Honduran time - an earthquake from 7,1 on the scale of Richter took place before the North Coast of Honduras. Right now, we do not know what the situation is up North. However, here in the South everything is calm. Apparently, the shock could be felt here, but as for me, it didn't even wake me up. So be reassured: Pespire is still as hot, sleepy and undisturbed as ever...

Bezoek uit België / Visit from Belgium

Terug aan het werk, de vakantie zit erop. En wat een vakantie - mét bezoek uit België! Zowel Isabelle als Julie hebben het erop gewaagd 2 weken in Honduras door te brengen. En ze hebben er geen spijt van! Wat volgt is een kort verslag van wat 2 heel drukke weken waren met veel gebeurtenissen. Maar ik laat vooral de foto's voor zich spreken...
In 2 weken tijd hebben we een paar dagen doorgebracht in Pespire, waar ze kennisgemaakt hebben met mijn buren, mijn collega's en vrienden. Uit eerste hand hebben ze ervaren dat internet en electriciteit hier geen evidentie zijn. Ik heb beiden ook meegenomen "op het terrein" om te laten zien wat ik hier doe en met wie ik werk. Het bezoek aan Doña Elvia, een van mijn favoriete vrouwen waarmee ik werk, was een doorslaand succes. De meiden zijn zelfs in de keuken toegelaten! Na een tocht naar Amapala waar we een paar reusachtige schalen zeevruchten verorberd hebben, was het tijd om Frank en Karen op te pikken in Tegucigalpa en door te reizen naar Utila - 1 van de Islas de la Bahia, de eilanden ten Noorden van Honduras - voor een paar dagen zon, feest, strand en 1 van mijn favoriete activiteiten: duiken. Ik kan met trots melden dat Julie nu haar level 1 - Open Water duikbrevet op zak heeft! Daarna door naar Copán Ruinas voor een vleugje cultuur aan de voet van de Mayatempels en een lange terugrit naar Tegucigalpa, net op tijd voor Isabelle om haar vlucht terug naar België te halen. Julie had het hier zo naar haar zin, dat ze nog een weekje langer in Pespire gebleven is. Maar ook zij is ondertussen verder getrokken, zij het in de richting van Guatemala. Ciao, meiden, ik heb genoten van jullie bezoek en ik mis jullie nu al. Tot met Kerst!!


Back to work, the holidays are over. And what a holidays - with visits from Belgium! Both Isabelle and Julie dared to come over to travel Honduras and trust me, they do not regret it! What follows is a short report about those 2 very busy weeks with loads of activities and events. But I'm sure the pictures will make things very clear...
In 2 weeks, we spend a couple of days in Pespire, where the girls got to know my neighbours, my collegues and my friends. They have now experienced that I am not kidding when I tell everyone that internet and electricity are not reliable around here. I took both of them "to the field", to show them what I do and with whom I work. The visit to Doña Elvia, one of my favourite women, was a great success. The girls even got allowed in the kitchen! Then, after a trip to Amapala, where we ate several big trays of seafood, it was time to pick up Frank and Karen in Tegucigalpa and to travel to Utila - 1 of the Islas de la Bahia, the islands in the North of Honduras - for a couple of days of sun, party, beach and 1 of my favourite activities: scuba diving! I can now proudly announce that Julie successfully finished her level 1 - Open Water diving course. After that, we drove to Copán Ruinas for some culture at the foot of the Maya tempels and then we were in for a long drive back to Tegucigalpa, just in time for Isabelle to catch her plane back to Belgium. Julie on the other hand was a little less in a rush and liked it so here that she stayed another week with me in Pespire. However, she has left too by now, off to see the wonders of Guatemala. Ciao, girls, I really enjoyed having you over and I miss you already. See you at Christmas!!

Semana Santa

Semana Santa – de week waar heel Centraal Amerika naar uitgekeken heeft. Het is de week waarin Centraal Amerika simpelweg plat ligt en waarin er een grote volksverhuizing plaatsvindt richting kust en toeristische trekpleisters. Ons oorspronkelijk plan om te gaan duiken op Utila – een eiland voor de noordkust van Honduras – is in het water gevallen door een te late reservatie. Blijkt dat in Januari elke kamer op het eiland al volgeboekt was. Dus hebben we een alternatief verzonnen: een roadtrip door Guatemala. “Wij” zijn Karen, mijn Hondurese vriendin, en Jacopo, mijn Italiaanse collega.


The gang

Eerste halte: San Salvador. Centraal Amerika staat niet direct bekend om haar goede wegen. En wij niet direct om ons talent om vroeg op te staan. Die combinatie maakt dat we vrij laat in San Salvador aangekomen zijn. Veel hebben we er deze keer dus niet van gezien, want de volgende ochtend zijn we direct doorgereden naar Antigua, Guatemala. Als stadje is Antigua beschermd als World Heritage Monument. En met reden. Antigua is een prachtig koloniaal stadje. Maar ook een van de bekendste toeristische trekpleisters van het land. Vrij vertaald betekent dit dat Antigua overspoeld is door toeristen en dat het grootste gedeelte van de zaakvoerders van restaurants en winkels buitenlanders zijn. Op naar de volgende halte dan maar!


Shopping!

De wind heeft ons vervolgens naar Panajachel geblazen. Ook een toeristische trekpleister, maar minder heftig dan Antigua. Panajachel ligt aan een groot meer omringd door vulkanen. Een prachtig zicht. Helaas was het weer op dat moment niet goed en zwemmen zat er dan ook niet in. Jammer. Verder dus maar.


Panajachel

Van Panajachel zijn we richting Quetzaltenango gereden, waar we vrij vroeg aangekomen zijn. Dus hebben we besloten om alsnog naar de warmwaterbronnen in Zunil te rijden. Een rit door de bergen over een baan net groot genoeg voor 1 auto met mist die ons zicht beperkte tot zo’n 3 meter... Creepy. Maar de gedachte aan een warme duik deed ons verderrijden... om eens aangekomen te ontdekken dat de boel al gesloten was. Niks aan te doen: rechtsomkeer en een nieuwe poging in de ochtend.

Aan de Guatemalteekse grens had men mij erop gewezen dat mijn visum maar geldig was tot de 14de. Ik kon het risico niet lopen om te wachten tot mijn terugkeer in Honduras om een verlenging aan te vragen omdat bleek dat de 13de en de 14de immigratie hoogstwaarschijnlijk gesloten zou zijn. Dus was er maar 1 oplossing: op naar Mexico! 1 Dag hebben we in Puerto Madero, Mexico doorgebracht. 1 Dag waarin we tot de ontdekking gekomen zijn dat Puerto Madero de absolute numeer 1 prijs in lelijkste stadje ooit verdient, dat beachparty’s onze onverdeelde aandacht verdienen, dat Mexicaanse mannen geen NO begrijpen en geen manieren hebben, dat de Mexicaanse politie graag taxi speelt als je maar een onschuldig en radeloos gezichtje opzet... Niet slecht voor 1 dag! En het belangrijkste is: ik mag opnieuw 3 maanden legaal in Honduras verblijven. Zelfs Karen, die Hondurese is, heeft nu een stempeltje in haar paspoort voor 3 maanden legaal verblijf.... Gekke mensen die Guatemalteken!

En toen was het tijd om naar huis te gaan. Een laatste volle dagrit later stonden we terug in Tegucigalpa klaar om opnieuw aan het werk te gaan.


Mexico or Guatemala?



Semana Santa – the week the whole of Central America has been waiting for. It’s the week that Central America simply shuts down and a complete exodus takes place towards the coast and touristy places. Our original plan was to go diving on Utila, an island north of Honduras, but that didn’t work out when we found out that every room had been booked since January... So we invented an alternative: a roadtrip through Guatemala. “We” are Karen, my Honduran friend and Jacopo, my Italian collegue.


Braiding hair

First stop: San Salvador. Central America is not exactely known for its good roads. And we are not exactely known for our talent to get up early in the morning. So we did not see much of San Salvador this time because of our late arrival. And the next morning we drove straight to Antigua. Antigua is a protected World Heritage Monument. And with reason, it’s a beautiful colonial city. But it is equally one of the most famous touristy places of the country. Meaning that the place is crowded with tourists and that most of the owners of restaurants or shops are foreigners. So, to the next stop!


Guatemala

The wind blew us to Panajachel. Also a touristic place, but less so than Antigua. Panajachel is located at a big lake surrounded by volcanoes. A beautiful sight. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t to good, so swimming was out of the question. Next!


Antigua

From Panajachel we went to Quetzaltenango, where we got pretty early. We thought it would give us time to still get to the Sulphersprings in Zunil. However, we did not count on the long trip through the mountains on a very small road in the dark with mist allowing us a sight of maximum 3 meters.... Creepy. It also ment the springs were closed when we got there. Oh well, a U-turn and a new try in the morning.


Sigh...

At the Guatemalan border they had pointed out that my visum would expire on the 14th. I could not run the risk to wait for my return to Tegucigalpa to apply for an extention because it turned out imigration would probably be closed till the 14th. Which left us with only 1 solution: Mexico, baby! We spent 1 day in Puerto Madero, Mexico. 1 Day in which we discovered that Puerto Madero is without doubt the ugliest town in the whole of the country, that beachparty’s always deserve our undivided attention, that Mexican men do not understand the word NO (in any language!) and that they have no manners whatsoever, that the Mexican police likes to play taxi as long as you put on an innocent and helpless face... Not bad for 1 day! And the most important is that I am again legal in Honduras for the next 3 months. Even Karen – who is Hondurese – got a stamp in her passport for 3 months legal stay... Strange people those Guatemaltecos!

And then it was time to go home. A full day of driving later we were back in Tegucigalpa, ready to go back to work.

Tijd dat jullie de zone leren kennen waar ik werk. De actie waarbinnen ik werk heet "Integración solidaria en cadenas económicas de pequeños agricultores/as, artesanos/as – laderas del trópico seco – Centro América" of vrij vertaald "Solidaire economie tussen kleine boeren in tropische drooggebieden". En dat het hier droog is, is zeker!
Regelmatig krijg ik ook de vraag wat het is, dat ik doe. Wel, mijn werk is niet vastomlijnd. Mijn job bestaat erin de lokale NGO - ADEPES - te ondersteunen in commerciele projecten. In praktijk is er momenteel 1 persoon, Katia, binnen ADEPES die instaat voor alles wat met commercialisatie te maken heeft en zij heeft geen economische opleiding. De vorming van Katia is nu dus 1 van mijn projecten. Andere projecten zijn de ondersteuning van de lokale markt alle 14 dagen waar onze productoren hun goederen komen verkopen, het geven van workshops over alles wat met "economia campesina" - oftewel economie op heel lokaal niveau - te maken heeft, onderzoek naar de noden op economisch vlak van onze productoren en het begeleiden van vrouwengroepen of boerengroepen in het opzetten van haalbaarheidsstudies en - uiteindelijk - een micro-onderneming. Hopelijk brengt dit wat duidelijkheid!





It is time for you all to get to know the zone I am working in. The action I work in, is named "Integración solidaria en cadenas económicas de pequeños agricultores/as, artesanos/as – laderas del trópico seco – Centro América" or freely translated "Solidarity economy between small farmes in dry tropical zones" And it is dry, all right!
I also quite often get asked what it is exactly what I do. Well, my job is not firmly defined. It consists of supporting the local NGO - ADEPES - in commercial projects. In practice, there is only 1 person, Katia, within the organisation that is responsible for everything that has to do with commercialisation and she has no background in economics. So the formation of Katia is one of my projects. Other projects are the support of the local market, held every 2 weeks, where our farmers come to sell their goods, the giving of workshops about everything that has to do with "economia campesina" - or the economy on very local level -, research on the economical needs of our farmes and the guidance of groups of women or groups of farmers on the execution of feasability studies and - in the end - a micro-enterprise. Hopefully this explanation makes things a bit clearer!
