Cayos Cochinos

It doesn't always have to be work. A visit to Cayos Cochinos was the absolute number 1 on my "to do"-list for this year.

Cayos Cochinos are a group small cays just of the northcoast of Honduras, with a total land area of - hold on - 2 km². The Cayos Cochinos are a Maritime Protected Area located in the second biggest coral reef worldwide. Spread over a couple of cays lives a Garifuna community (108 members on the last count), but most cays are private property.

With a group of 8 people, we went for a couple of days to enjoy the sun, the beach, the sea and some "just us and the locals". Judge for yourself!

De boog hoeft niet altijd gespannen te staan. Op mijn "must do"-lijstje voor dit jaar stond een bezoek aan Cayos Cochinos met stip op nummer 1.

Cayos Cochinos is een groep kleine eilandjes net voor de Hondurese noordkust, met een totale oppervlakte van ongeveer - hou je vast - 2 km². De Cayos Cochinos liggen in een beschermd maritiem gebied in het tweede grootste koraalrif ter wereld. Over een paar eilandjes verspreid woont een Garífuna-gemeenschap (108 leden sinds de laatste telling), maar de meeste eilandjes zijn in privé-bezit.

Met een groep van 8 man zijn we daar een paar dagen naartoe getrokken, om te genieten van zon, zee, strand en "just us and the locals". Oordeel zelf!

Yoro

Mensen vragen me dikwijls wat ik nu eigenlijk doe. Misschien is het tijd om 1 van de projecten voor te stellen en een beetje licht in de duisternis te brengen.

Een van de projecten waaraan ik werk is met de ethnische minderheid Tolupan in Yoro. Het project wordt gefinancierd door de Europese Unie, en uitgevoerd door OIKOS (de NGO waarvoor ik werk) en ICADE, een hondurese NGO. Wij ondersteunen de lokale organisatie APROINY(Asociación de Productores Indígenas de Yoro) en haar 694 leden, allemaal boeren.

Ons project bestaat uit verschillende activiteiten:
1) APROINY versterken door de leiders (zowel binnen APROINY als van de gemeenschappen)te trainen op verschillende vlakken, zoals financieën, administratie, etc.
2) Landbouwproductie opdrijven door 30 boeren te helpen bij het installeren van ecologisch en economisch duurzame technieken. Door het organiseren van "leerdagen" dragen die 30 boeren hun kennis over op andere boeren die de technieken dan op hun eigen productie kunnen toepassen.
3) Samen met APROINY werken we aan een radioprogramma waarin de cultuur en identiteit van de Tolupanes worden gepromoot en zodoende bewaard blijven.
4) APROINY en haar leiders worden aangeleerd om voor zichzelf op te komen. Daarvoor zoekt het project de banden met de lokale overheden aan te halen en hun aandacht te vestigen op de noden van de ethnische minderheid. Bovendien wordt hen aangeleerd hoe ze zelf fondsen kunnen zoeken en projecten kunnen aanvragen.

Een project van deze omvang is niet in een paar alineas samen te vatten, maar ik hoop dat met deze kleine beschrijving de dingen wat duidelijker zijn!





People ask me often what it is I actually do. Maybe it is time to present one of the projects and shed some light on my work.

One of the projects I am working on is with the ethnic minority Tolupan, in Yoro. The project is financed by the European Union and executed by OIKOS (the NGO I work for) and ICADE, a honduran NGO. We support the local organisation APROINY (Asociación de Productores Indígenas de Yoro) and its 694 members - all indigineaous farmers.

Our project consists of different activities:
1) Fortifying APROINY by training the people in charge and the community leaders in different areas, such as financial control, administration, etc.
2) Increasing agricultural production by helping 30 local farmers implement ecological and economical sustainable techniques. By organising "learning days", other farmers learn from these 30 farmers how to implement these techniques on their own lands.
3) Together with APROINY, we are working on a radio programm in which the culture and the identity of the Tolupanes will be promoted in order to preserve it.
4) APROINY and its leaders are being taught how to fend for themselves. The project seeks to improve communication with local authorities in order to draw their attention towards the needs of the ethnic minority. Also, the leaders of APROINY are taught how to look for fundings and how to apply for them by themselves.

A project as big as this one, cannot be explained in a couple of paragraphs. But I hope that with this little summary, things are a bit clearer!

Fiesta

My new home has had its big housewarming party, complete with salsa music, food, drinks and real belgian chocolate mousse. Pictures say more than words, but this I would like to say: now it really feels like home!!

Mijn nieuw huisje is ingewijd met een stevig feestje, compleet met salsamuziek, eten, drinken en echte belgische chocolade mousse. Foto's zeggen meer dan woorden, maar dit wil ik nog even kwijt: nu voelt het echt als thuis!!
