Tijd dat jullie de zone leren kennen waar ik werk. De actie waarbinnen ik werk heet "Integración solidaria en cadenas económicas de pequeños agricultores/as, artesanos/as – laderas del trópico seco – Centro América" of vrij vertaald "Solidaire economie tussen kleine boeren in tropische drooggebieden". En dat het hier droog is, is zeker!
Regelmatig krijg ik ook de vraag wat het is, dat ik doe. Wel, mijn werk is niet vastomlijnd. Mijn job bestaat erin de lokale NGO - ADEPES - te ondersteunen in commerciele projecten. In praktijk is er momenteel 1 persoon, Katia, binnen ADEPES die instaat voor alles wat met commercialisatie te maken heeft en zij heeft geen economische opleiding. De vorming van Katia is nu dus 1 van mijn projecten. Andere projecten zijn de ondersteuning van de lokale markt alle 14 dagen waar onze productoren hun goederen komen verkopen, het geven van workshops over alles wat met "economia campesina" - oftewel economie op heel lokaal niveau - te maken heeft, onderzoek naar de noden op economisch vlak van onze productoren en het begeleiden van vrouwengroepen of boerengroepen in het opzetten van haalbaarheidsstudies en - uiteindelijk - een micro-onderneming. Hopelijk brengt dit wat duidelijkheid!

The action I work in, is named "Integración solidaria en cadenas económicas de pequeños agricultores/as, artesanos/as – laderas del trópico seco – Centro América" or freely translated "Solidarity economy between small farmes in dry tropical zones" And it is dry, all right!
I also quite often get asked what it is exactly what I do. Well, my job is not firmly defined. It consists of supporting the local NGO - ADEPES - in commercial projects. In practice, there is only 1 person, Katia, within the organisation that is responsible for everything that has to do with commercialisation and she has no background in economics. So the formation of Katia is one of my projects. Other projects are the support of the local market, held every 2 weeks, where our farmers come to sell their goods, the giving of workshops about everything that has to do with "economia campesina" - or the economy on very local level -, research on the economical needs of our farmes and the guidance of groups of women or groups of farmers on the execution of feasability studies and - in the end - a micro-enterprise. Hopefully this explanation makes things a bit clearer!

Lang geleden... / Long time...

Ok, ok, het is weer even geleden sinds ik een update gegeven heb. Niet dat er niets gebeurd is, in tegendeel, het is vrij druk geweest! Eens kijken...
- Ik ben 2 weken geleden verhuisd van het rustige Choluteca naar het slaperige Pespire, waar ik nu full time werk. Ik ben in een klein appartement-style huisje getrokken met grote patio en gratis 2-jarige kleine.... Mijn buurvrouw (en collega) Ethels zoon Angel geniet ervan in mijn huisje rond te hangen. Hij is een schatje, maar super energiek. Wie had er ooit gedacht dat ik, Miss Nooit-trouwen-en-geen-kinderen, nu haar huis kind-veilig aan het maken is?? Het is een bizarre wereld! Fotos volgen later omdat mijn huisje er nog uitziet alsof er een orkaan gepasseerd is...
- Een volgende taller (workshop) is ook gekomen en gegaan. Deze keer een vrij belangrijke, met de aanwezigheid van minstens de leiders van elke gemeenschap waarmee we werken. Ongelooflijk hoe gedisciplineerd deze mensen zijn! Probeer maar eens een debat te leiden in Europa met 42 mensen over een onderwerp dat ieder van hen persoonlijk aangaat. Je bevindt je al gauw in een oorlogszone van geroep... Hier daarentegen, is het vanzelfsprekend dat men elkaar laat uitspreken en dat men zijn of haar hand opsteekt om het woord te vragen - én iets interssants zegt.
- Zoals gewoonlijk heb ik ook dagen "in het veld" - in ons geval bergen - doorgebracht om de organisatorische behoeften van de gemeenschappen in Concepcion in kaart te brengen. 1 specifieke trip leidde me langs 12 gemeenschappen in 3 dagen, met de moto op helse wegen. Loving it!
- Uiteraard is er ook een deel fun geweest, in de vorm van vrienden, feestjes en dinners. Maar hey, jullie moeten ook niet alles weten, nietwaar?












Ok, ok, it's been a while since I've written an update. Not that nothing happened - on the contrary, I've been very busy! Let's see...
- I moved about 2 weeks ago out of tranquile Choluteca to dormant Pespire, where I now work full time. I got myself a little appartment-style house with big patio and free 2-year-old kid... My neighbour (and colleague) Ethel's son Angel loves hanging around my house. He's adorable, but super energetic. Who would have thougth that I, Miss I-never-get-married-or-have-kids, is now making her house child-safe?? It's a strange world, folks! Photos will follow later on as my house is still a mess...
- Another taller (workshop) has come and gone. This time quite an important one, with presence of at least the leaders of each community. Incredible though how disciplined these people are! Try leading a debate in Europe with 42 people about a topic that affects every single one of them. You'd soon find yourself in a yelling warzone... Here however, it goes without saying that they let each other speak and raise their hands to say something - and something interesting at that.
- As usual I spend several days "in the field" - in our case mountains - trying to find out the organizational needs of the communities of Concepcion. One particular outing let me to 12 Communities in 3 days, by motorbike on roads of hell. Loving it!
- Obviously there has been the share of fun in form of friends, parties and dinners. But hey, you don't need to know it all either, do you?
