I'm back in Honduras. A big change again after nearly 2 months indulging in the luxuries of Europe. I've had the chance to see plenty of my family, to party wildly with my friends in Belgium, Bucharest and Barcelona, to go skiing, and to gain weight eating all the delicious food of my homeplace. Now I'm back, batteries fully recharged and with a new contract in my pocket.
From now on I will be working for OIKOS, a Portuguese NGO. My new job consists in evaluating and monitoring our projects throughout Honduras, identifying possible new partners, writing new project proposals and giving support to our existing projects. All this involves a lot of travelling through Honduras, as our projects are situated in the South and Central Honduras. No complaining so far!
My first trip to Yoro, in Central Honduras, already provided me with a new anecdote. Some time ago - before our project started - our local partner had had a considerable amount of money stolen by the then accountant. This obviously interferes with the proper functioning of the organisation. Upon our question if there was any possibility to (legally) recover the money, the president of the Junta Directiva answered most seriously: "But he (the accountant) already confessed and was pardonned by the priest..."
And here I was, trying hard to refrain from laughing, thinking by now I had heard it all... I'm definately in for some more stories and surprises this year. It's good to be back!
Ik ben terug in Honduras. Een hele verandering na bijna 2 maanden wentelen in de luxe van Europa. Ik heb kans gezien om tijd met mijn family door te brengen, om wilde feestjes te houden met mijn vrienden in België, Boekarest en Barcelona, om te gaan skiën en om bij te komen van al het heerlijke eten uit mijn thuisbasis. Nu ben ik terug, batterijen volledig opgeladen en met een nieuw contract op zak.
Van nu af aan werk ik voor OIKOS, een Portugese NGO. Mijn job bestaat uit de evaluatie en opvolging van onze projecten in Honduras, het identificeren van mogelijke nieuwe partners, het schrijven van nieuwe projecten en het ondersteunen van de bestaande projecten. Dit betekent heel wat gereis door Honduras, aangezien onze projecten verspreid zijn over Zuid- en Centraal Honduras. Geen klachten tot dusver!
Mijn eerste trip naar Yoro, in Centraal Honduras, heeft alvast een nieuwe anekdote opgeleverd. Vóór de start van ons project ginder, heeft de toenmalige boekhouder van onze partnerorganisatie een aanzienlijke som geld verduisterd. Dit verstoort uiteraard de degelijke werking van die organisatie. Op onze vraag of er een mogelijkheid bestaat om dat geld (legaal) terug te vorderen, antwoordde de presidente van de Junta Directiva heel serieus: "Maar hij (de boekhouder) heeft al alles opgebiecht en de priester heeft hem vergeven..."
En daar zat ik dan, hard mijn best doend om niet te lachen, denkend dat ik alles al gehoord had... Ik sta duidelijk voor meer verhalen en verrassingen in het komende jaar. It's good to be back!
