Lang geleden... / Long time...

Loving it!

Ok, ok, it's been a while since I've written an update. Not that nothing happened - on the contrary, I've been very busy! Let's see...
- I moved about 2 weeks ago out of tranquile Choluteca to dormant Pespire, where I now work full time. I got myself a little appartment-style house with big patio and free 2-year-old kid... My neighbour (and colleague) Ethel's son Angel loves hanging around my house. He's adorable, but super energetic. Who would have thougth that I, Miss I-never-get-married-or-have-kids, is now making her house child-safe?? It's a strange world, folks! Photos will follow later on as my house is still a mess...
- Another taller (workshop) has come and gone. This time quite an important one, with presence of at least the leaders of each community. Incredible though how disciplined these people are! Try leading a debate in Europe with 42 people about a topic that affects every single one of them. You'd soon find yourself in a yelling warzone... Here however, it goes without saying that they let each other speak and raise their hands to say something - and something interesting at that.
- As usual I spend several days "in the field" - in our case mountains - trying to find out the organizational needs of the communities of Concepcion. One particular outing let me to 12 Communities in 3 days, by motorbike on roads of hell. Loving it!
- Obviously there has been the share of fun in form of friends, parties and dinners. But hey, you don't need to know it all either, do you?

Buren / Neighbours

Honduras is quickly on it’s way to the hottest period of the year. In the South, that means dust, lots and lots of dust. So I come home after 3 days of absence only to discover that my house has turned into a true sandbox. Everything is covered in dust and sand. I’ve got no option but to start cleaning. So I roll up my (imaginary) sleeves and start the seemingly impossible task. But just as I’m sweeping the last of the sand outside, a strong gust of wind closes the door behind me. Upon which I realise that I don’t have my key - nor my mobile phone, money or key for Marie... *#&*§*!!!
I only have 1 key and the owner, who possibly might have another one, lives in Tegucigalpa, a 4-hour drive with the bus. And let's face it, I'm not exactly dressed to face the public world... So I go to the neighbours, maybe they know someone who can force the lock. They don’t, but it turns out I’m not the only one who does this kind of stupid stuff. Their 13-year-old daughter comes out with a cut up plastic bottle of sprite. Full of confidence, she walks up to my closed door and starts pushing the plastic in the gap. One minute later, my door jumps open. A whole set of thoughts rushes through my brain: gladness for not having to sleep outside, amazement that a young girl has developped this kind of skills and worry, because if a 13-year-old can do this, well, then there is little that will stop thieves!
Again, I have learned a few useful things in just under 10 minutes:
1) Never leave the house without key
2) How to open a door with a plastic bottle
3) Sprite can actually be multifunctional
4) 13-year-olds sometimes have highly underestimated skills...

Workshop Volens in Nacaome

The 2-day workshop “Development and launching of new products”, organised by the Volens-cooperant in El Salvador, Hansel, and myself in Nacaome, Honduras, has finished. The workshop was intended for both productores and tecnicos from the various local organisations that take part in the action Economía Solidaria of Volens. With 17 people from Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua, the workshop can be considered a success. Day 1 was a day for theory, with expositions on markets, innovation of products, market studies, development of products,… A heavy program that definitely needs to be repeated several times in the comunidades, but that is important in the learning process of the productores. A lot of productores in Central America tend to make derivate products of whatever they produce without knowing beforehand if the whole process can be rentable. An example with the groups I work with is the making of jaleas. Various groups of women want to make jaleas because it is relatively easy, it looks good and the ingredients are quite easy to come by. (ex. Papaya, pineapple en mango). The problem is though, that nobody here eats jalea. It’s just no part of the Honduran culture. Hence, the relatively expensive jaleas (± 1,5 to 2 US $) don’t sell. Very little in Pespire town and virtually none in the comunidades. Day 2 was all about practice. In group, the participants received recipes for a product. Group 1 for the making of dulces of banana and tamarindo, group 2 for the making of encurtido. First, they had to come up with a definition of their market, a name, a calculation of the costs, a way to innovate the existing recipe,… Later they actually had to cook the innovated recipe, after which the new products were to be evaluated. As proved by the included movie, we had a good and creative time! For those who feel the urge to try out the recipes at home: they are obtainable upon demand!
